Suggested Freshman Timeline for Choosing a Major

1st Semester

  • Search the Choosing a Major brochure for majors that interest you.
  • Comprise a list of your top 3 major choices, then review in the catalog the requirements for the majors you have selected.
  • Meet with an advisor in the college offering the major for additional information.
  • Talk to everyone-students, advisors, professors, people already working in that field, anyone that can give you information about your interests.
  • Identify possible courses you could take to explore majors. It is recommended you enroll in at least one critical tracking course towards the major(s) of interest.  Don't limit yourself to introductory courses, which only provide overview information.

2nd Semester

  • Continue enrolling in critical tracking courses for the major(s) in which you might be interested.
  • Continue gathering information and talking to people that will help you to make a decision.

3rd Semester

  • Continue enrolling in critical tracking courses for your intended major.
  • Declare your major at the designated college advising office.
