Double Major and Dual Degree Information for College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS) Students

Beginning Summer B 2004, the following guidelines will be strictly enforced for all students seeking a double major or dual degree in the CLAS:

  1. must already be admitted to one of the majors and have between 45 and 96 hours (not including AP, IB, dual enrollment, or overseas study credit)
  2. must have at least a 3.0 UFGPA at the time of submitting the application if at least one of the majors are in the CLAS.  However, if the student is seeking a double major or dual degree that includes two majors from the following list, a 3.5 GPA is required:
    • Criminology
    • Economics (An Economics major is not possible in conjunction with a Business or Accounting major)
    • English
    • History
    • Political Science
    • Psychology
    • Sociology
  3. must meet all Universal Tracking term 5 requirements for all CLAS majors.  If one of the majors is outside CLAS, applicants must get approval from the appropriate college
  4. must meet all other CLAS progression standards for both majors and demonstrate potential for success in both majors (successful completion of major and major-related courses without excessive W’s, grades less than C, or multiple repeats)
  5. must be able to complete the degree in a reasonable number of semesters; additional study is permitted only with Dean’s approval
  6. must have demonstrated a well articulated educational goal for which the double major or dual degree is necessary

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Academic Advising Center (AAC) provides several advising services for CLAS students, undecided students and other students interested in CLAS majors. Individual advising sessions are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM.- 5:00 PM. The AAC also offers Pre-Health and Pre-Law advising.  To make an appointment with an academic advisor or a pre-health or pre-law advisor, please sign-up in Room 100, AAC or call 392-1521.

Please note that at certain times of the year (such as right before the beginning of a semester), a large number of students may attempt to use the advising center at the same time. During these special times, the waiting list can be rather long. Please plan your visit accordingly.

Transient Students

Thinking about taking classes away from UF this summer?  If you are a student currently in any major for CLAS, please keep the following in mind:

  1. You will need to complete a CLAS transient student request form and the transient form itself.
  2. Contact the school that you would like to attend to determine if that school has any deadlines for transient students, if the school requires any paperwork other than the transient form itself, what courses are being offered there, and how to register for those courses.
  3. There is a common course numbering system within the state of Florida which states that if the prefix of a course, and the last 3 numbers of the course to align with that of a course at UF, it is the same course (e.g. POS1041=POS2041).  Exception is Gordon Rule.
  4. Once you have determined which courses you wish to take, complete the transient form and return to the AAC to sign in and meet with any available advisor in order to obtain approval for taking these courses.
