How To See a Pre-Health AdvisorAppointmentsYou may make an appointment with a pre-health advisor by
calling (352) 392-1521 x204. Third and Fourth year students
should request to make an appointment with Robert Kwong. All
first and second year students must have attended the Introduction to
Pre-health Workshop
for First and Second students before scheduling an appointment to see
Jeff Morales. Second year students who have not attended that
workshop during their freshman year must attend before being permitted
to schedule an appointment. Students who were unable to attend a
live
workshop must watch the videotaped session instead. Students
meeting a pre-health advisor for the first time must also complete a
short questionaire
before the scheduled appointment. Appointments are 30 minutes, with a 10 minute grace period. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, you must reschedule the appointment. If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please call the office at least 1 day in advance. If you do not show up for an appointment, it will be recorded as a “no-show.” If you no show or cancel an appointment two consecutive times, you will lose your appointment privileges for the current term and will only be allowed to see a pre-health advisor during walk-in hours. OHLPA offers individual advising to pre-health students who have questions regarding their particular situations. Since the Health Professions Handbook will tell you almost everything you need to know about preparing for a post baccalaureate health profession, students should read the handbook before meeting with an advisor, so that the student may approach the advising session with well informed questions. Please note that OHLPA pre-health advising is available regarding the post baccalaureate health professions of medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), dentistry, veterinary medicine, podiatry, optometry, naturopathic medicine, public health, physician assistant and chiropractic. For information on other health professions, you may also contact the College of Nursing , the College of Health and Human Performance , the College of Public Health & Health Professions , or the Physician's Assistant Program . For other health professions not listed here, please see our Other Links section. Walk-in AdvisingPre-health advisors are also available during walk-in advising
hours on a limited basis. If you have in-depth questions that may
require a session longer than 15 minutes, please schedule an
appointment. You may call (352) 392-1521 x100 to find out when a
pre-health advisor will be available during walk-in hours. During
walk-in hours, pre-health advisors also see general students, and are
only available on a first come, first serve basis. Hours and Location Group Advising in Q & A SessionsQ & A sessions are offered weekly with topics that rotate each week. These sessions are designed to answer many of the frequently asked questions in a group setting. Many students benefit from such sessions because they feed off each other's questions and the advising session becomes much more dynamic and interactive. The Q & A sessions are offered on a fixed weekly schedule and generally meet in the same location each week. The sessions are 1 hour in length and students may come and go as they please. Students do not need to sign up to attend. Weekly topic announcements via the pre-health listserv will be provided. Even if the topic of the day is not related to a concern you may have, you may still attend and ask your question during the last half of the session. Students wishing to attend the Q & A session do not need to sign in at the front desk on the first floor. Simply come up to the assigned room on the day the session is being held. The sessions will be held usually at the Academic Advising Center of Farrior Hall, Room 202 unless otherwise posted. The Q & A schedule will be sent to students who have subscribed to the pre-health listserv. If you are not on the pre-health listserv, please consider subscribing. Students may attend as many of these sessions they want. Some topics discussed are: 1) Where to find healthcare experience? 2) Does it really matter if I was an English major versus a Chemistry major? 3) What other fields of health care careers are there other than medicine and dentistry? 4) How to determine if a Foreign Medical Program is the best option for me? 5) How do I begin the writing process for the personal statement? If you have questions that require discretion and looking up your personal records, please schedule an appointment.
