Pre-Health Workshops

We offer workshops on information for first and second year students , information for transfer students , medical interviews , dental interviews , writing your personal statement , application process , and the summer medical education program, Junior Honors Medical Program, second year students.

New! Upcoming workshops

You may sign up for one of the workshops by completing the workshop registration form in the OHLPA library of the Academic Advising Center Room 204 in Farrior Hall.

These workshops are held in 200 Academic Advising Center of Farrior Hall.  
Workshops are also available for viewing on video in the Academic Advising Center during regular hours.  To watch a video, please call 352-392-1521 ext. 204 to make sure it is available and bring a picture I.D. to Room 204.  Videos must be watched in the Academic Advising Center and may not be taken out of the building.

Introduction to Pre-Health Preparation Workshop:

These workshops are geared towards first year and second year students who, for the first time,  are interested in going on to professional health care programs of medicine, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic,pharmacy, veterinary and podiatric medicine. Second year students who have not attended this workshop as a freshman must go to this workshop before they can schedule an appointment to see an advisor.  Topics covered include:

  • Timeline to application
  • Characteristics of a Competitive Applicant
  • Prerequisite courses
  • Deciding on a major
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Health care experience opportunities

You may sign up for one of the workshops by completing a workshop registration form in the OHLPA Office of the Academic Advising Center, Room 204, of Farrior Hall by Becky Sandbach's desk.   After completing the registration form, place it in the GREEN workshop binder under the appropriate workshop title.    Seating is very limited.

Once you reserved a seat and realized you are unable to attend, please inform us at least 24 hours in advance so another student can attend. There is no waiting list created once the seats are filled. Videotapes of past workshops are available for viewing in 204 Academic Advising Center if you are not able to attend a live session.

** Pre-health freshman students who are in UF's Honors Program will have the opportunity to attend this workshop provided at Hume for a different date.  Please keep an eye out for an announcement via the Honors listserv for days and times for this workshop.  Honors students have the option of attending the regularly scheduled workshop listed above or the ones facilitated at Hume.

Health Professions Workshops are held in the Fall of each academic year and at least once in the Spring. If you have questions about your preparation for a health profession program, you may read the Health Professions Handbook.  If you are unable to attend a live session, a video recording of the current workshops will be available later in the semester.

Please note: It is required that you attend one of the following workshops before scheduling an individual appointment with a prehealth advisor. By doing this, we will ensure that you have learned the basic information and can approach your appointment with informed questions. We have found that our advising appointments are more meaningful this way.  If you are unable to attend the live workshop session, you may watch a videotaped session instead.

Medical School Interview Workshop: For Applicants to the 2008 entering class

If you are applying to medical school for the 2008 Entering Class, please consider attending this workshop.  Dr. Ira Gessner, Chair of the Medical Selections Committee at University of Florida's College of Medicine will be our guest speaker.  Miss Robyn Sheppard, Director of Admissions at University of Florida's College of Medicine will also be attending the workshop.  Miss Sheppard will provide an overview about the secondary application process and procedures for scheduling interviews.  Dr. Ira Gessner will discuss the interview and selection process and provide suggestions for a successful interview. Current medical school students will be joining us and they will share their personal experiences about what they went through when they were applying and interviewing.

Dental School Interview Workshop: For Applicants to the 2008 entering class

If you are applying to dental school for the 2008 Entering Class, please consider attending this workshop. Dr. Venita Sposetti, Assistant Dean of Admissions of the University of Florida, College of Dentistry, will be our guest speaker. Current students at University of Florida's College of Dentistry will also be attending the workshop. Dr. Sposetti can also answer questions about the secondary application process and procedures for scheduling interviews in addition to giving suggestions for a successful interview. Personal Statement and Letter of Recommendation Workshop

Find out what professional schools mean by a "personal statement". Learn how to ask for letters of recommendation and understand what is meant by a strong and supportive letter.  Only those students applying for the 2008 entering class to medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy veterinary, podiatry, physician assistant schools may attend this workshop.  Students considering applying to the Junior Honors Medical Program (second year) or the Combined B.S.-D.M.D program (first year) may also attend.  This workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Admissions Criteria for the personal statement
  • Elements of composing the personal statement
  • Tips for writing the personal statement
  • How to obtain letters of recommendation
  • Elements of a strong letter of recommendation
  • When to request letters to be written
  • Types of letters of recommendations

Health Professions Application Workshops: For Applicants to the 2009 entering class

If you are planning to apply to medical school, dental school, podiatry school, or veterinary school for the 2009 entering class, come to one of the following application workshops and find out about the following:

  • Timing of application
  • Centralized and On-line application services
  • Secondary (formal) applications
  • Letters of recommendation/OHLPA Letter Service
  • Personal statements

You may sign up for one of the workshops by completing a workshop registration form.   Links for each form are at the end of each workshop description.  After completing the registration form, submit to the Office of Health and Legal Professions Advising, Academic Advising Center Room 204 (Farrior Hall) and place it in the  workshop binder under the appropriate workshop title.    Seating is very limited.

Space is limited, only attend an application workshop if you are planning to apply this summer/fall for the 2009 entering class. If you are not applying for the 2009 class and have questions about your preparation for a health profession program, you may read the Health Professions Handbook. If you still have questions, you may schedule an appointment with a Pre-Health Professions Advisor by calling 392-1521, and pressing 204.

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) Information Session

This is a summer program designed to help students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds better prepare for the medical profession.  The program provides pre-medical and predental students with the opportunities to get health care and shadowing experience, MCAT or DAT preparation, experience with medical science courses, and a chance to meet with the admissions representatives of various schools.  Almost all the programs are free to students who are accepted.  To find out more about SMDEP, please attend the information session.  Students who have attended SMDEP from previous years will presenting at this workshop.

Junior Honors Medical Program Information Session

This is an Honors Combined B.S.-M.D. degree for those students interested in pursuing an accelerated medical training  program.  Typically students will complete threes of undergraduate study and then begin medical school in the fourth year.  The first year of medical school will count towards the undergraduate degree program and as the first year of medical school at University of Florida College of Medicine.  At the end of the seven years, the student will have earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor Medicine degree.  Students in their first or second year interested in learning more about this honors medical program are encouraged to attend this information session.

Junior Honors Medical Program students will be in attendance to share their experiences about the program and answer questions you have about the program.

Pre-Health Preparation Workshop for Second Year Students

These workshops are geared towards second year students who have begun pre-health preparation since they started as a freshman. This workshop is designed to help students understand what the next steps are in the preparation for the application process when they become juniors. This workshop will also cover issues students may have about recovering from a less than competitive beginning during the freshman year. Topics covered include:

  • Timeline to application
  • Characteristics of a Competitive Applicant
  • Recovering from a "bad" freshman year
  • Exploring other Health Care Career Options
  • Research opportunities
  • Preparing for Letters of Recommendation and the Personal Statement
  • Changing majors
  • Reflecting on Health care experience
