Anesthesiology Assistant


Anesthesiologist Assistants are highly educated allied health professionals who work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists to develop and implement anesthesia care plans. Anesthesiologist Assistants work exclusively within the Anesthesia Care Team environment as described by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). AA’s are trained extensively in the delivery and maintenance of quality anesthesia care as well as advanced patient monitoring techniques.

Prerequisites

  • General Chemistry: CHM2045/L and CHM2046/L or CHM2051; or CHM2047/L (CHM2054L may be substituted for CHM2045L and CHM2046L)
  • General Biology: BSC2010/L and BSC2011/L
  • Organic Chemistry: CHM2210 or CHM2212 and CHM2211 or CHM2213 and CHM2211L (CHM3217, CHM3218, and CHM2211L may substitute)
  • Physics: PHY2048/L and PHY2049/L
  • Biochemistry: BCH4024 or CHM3218
  • Math: MAC2311 or MAC3472 and STA2023
  • English: Two semesters of any English department course. Examples are ENC1101, ENC1102, ENC3254, LIT2110)

  • Medical Anesthesia Association (MAA): This is an opportunity for individuals who are eager to learn more about anesthesia and want to join a supportive network of like-minded individuals! Shadowing opportunities, MCAT / GRE guidance, networking, volunteering opportunities, and guest speaker panels ranging from alumni and healthcare professionals to program directors will all be offered!

  • Undergraduate
    • UF does not currently have a specific undergraduate program for Anesthesiology Assistants.
    • You may choose ANY major and go on to an Anesthesiology Assistant program. Choose a major based on your own personal interests and strengths. It doesn’t need to be a science major- majors in the social sciences or humanities are just fine if you take the prerequisite courses.
    • You are encouraged to meet with a pre-health advisor to discuss the prerequisite courses that should be included in your plan of study
  • Graduate
    • UF does not currently have a specific graduate program for Anesthesiology Assistants
