Updates to CLAS Basic Distribution and Upper Division Electives Requirements

In 2024-2025, the State Board of Education reviewed the courses offered for General Education at all State Universities and State Colleges and ultimately approved an updated list of General Education courses. This update reduced the number of courses approved for General Education significantly. Courses offered at the 3000-level or higher or otherwise deemed not to comply with Florida Statutes are no longer approved for General Education.

The reduction in General Education courses significantly reduced the options for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences students for the CLAS Basic Distribution Requirement. In addition, some courses were re-numbered to the 2000-level to retain their General Education, meaning they would not automatically count for CLAS Electives (3000-level or above, not in major).

CLAS will allow its students in catalog years 2025-2026 or earlier to continue to count specific courses toward the College requirements of Basic Distribution and CLAS Electives Outside Major, 3000 Level or Above.

Students entering UF (as a freshman) Summer B 2026 or later should refer to the Schedule of Courses for accurate General Education designations.

CLAS Basic Distribution Courses

CLAS majors under the 2025-2026 Catalog Year and earlier may apply six to seven (6-7) credits of courses on the lists below to their CLAS Distribution requirement and Natural Science Laboratory requirement, within the following guidelines:

  • no more than 3 credits of Humanities,
  • no more than 3 credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences, or
  • no more than 6 credits of Biological or Physical Sciences, and
  • 1 credit for Natural Science Laboratory.
  • We will accept these courses until students under these complete their degrees.*
