CLAS Multiple (Double) Major and Dual Degree Guidelines

Students who are interested in studying two disciplines may apply to pursue a multiple (double) major or a dual degree. The two disciplines may not extensively overlap. Each multiple major/dual degree application will be reviewed to ensure that the student will complete a minimum of 15 credits of coursework exclusive to each major that will not count toward the other major or any minors or certificates. Approval to pursue a multiple major/dual degree does not guarantee the student will be granted both upon graduation.

Approval to pursue an academic goal such as multiple majors or a dual degree does not guarantee that the goal will be supported/funded by the student’s financial aid and/or scholarships or that the student will not incur an Excess Hours surcharge. Students should review all approved academic plans with the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships and consult their Excess Hours screen to ensure they know what, if anything, will be funded or incur a surcharge.

To earn multiple majors or a dual degree, a student must be certified for and graduate from all undergraduate programs of study at the same time. Students do not need to take the final class(es) in each major/degree in their last semester, but students cannot graduate in one major before the other.

Eligibility for Multiple (Double) Majors and Dual Degrees

All students seeking a double major or dual degree in CLAS must:

  1. Already be admitted to one of the majors and have between 45 and 96 hours (not including AICE, AP, IB, dual enrollment, or overseas study credit). Applications received after 96 hours earned will be considered, provided the student can graduate in a timely fashion. Also, applications must be submitted before the beginning of the student’s final semester as an undergraduate.
  2. Meet the minimum UF GPA required to pursue a CLAS double major or dual degree:
    • 3.0 for students who want to complete two majors/degrees and, at most, one of those majors is overenrolled, or
    • 3.5 for students who want to complete two CLAS majors and BOTH majors are overenrolled
      Overenrolled Majors in CLAS
      Biology (all tracks)
      Chemistry (all tracks)
      Computer Science
      Economics
      Psychology (all tracks)
  3. Complete all Universal Tracking Term 5 requirements for all CLAS majors, before submitting their application. If one of the majors is outside of CLAS, applicants must get approval from the appropriate department and college for that major. The only exception is students wishing to add an Economics major. Students may be approved if they meet the Universal Tracking Term 4 requirements for Economics. They must successfully complete ECO3101 in their first term after approval for the multiple/dual.
  4. Meet all other CLAS progression standards for both majors and demonstrate the potential for success in both majors (successful completion of major and major-related courses without excessive W’s, grades less than C, or multiple repeats).
  5. Be able to complete the degree in a timely fashion (typically eight post-high school fall/spring semesters for students who entered UF as Summer B or Fall freshmen, eight post-high school spring/summer semesters for students who entered UF as Innovation Academy freshmen and six fall/spring semesters for students who entered UF as transfer students).
  6. Have clearly articulated and purposeful reasons for which the double major or dual degree is appropriate.
  7. Not have been previously denied admission to that major as a transfer student.
  8. Be applying for a combination of majors that is not restricted due to too much overlap. See Major/Degree Combination Restrictions, which includes a list of major/degree combinations that will not be approved due to too much overlap and a list of major combinations that have potential for extensive overlap. For the latter combinations, students are required to include an additional form with their application to demonstrate exclusivity.
  9. CLAS Multiple (Double) Majors or Dual Degree Application Process

Choose either the Multiple Major or Dual Degree Form.

Multiple Majors (Within a College) ApplicationTwo majors within CLAS that are both Bachelor of Arts degrees, or both Bachelor of Science degrees. One diploma is awarded with both majors listed
Dual Degree ApplicationTwo majors offered by different colleges OR a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science within CLASTwo diplomas are awarded, one for each degree

If your major combination is on the list of majors with potential extensive overlap (add link), please include the “Major Exclusivity Form” with your application. You will need to have completed all exclusive coursework before submitting your application.

Students should read the instructions on these forms carefully. Assuming the application has the appropriate departmental/other college approvals, you may upload your form for review. The CLAS AAC will process the multiple major/dual degree application in 10 business days.

Note that meeting the eligibility requirements above does not guarantee approval of a double major or dual degree.

    Tips for Form Completion

    • Students must label the semesters on their program plan with the term and year (ex. F25=Fall 2025, Sp2026=Spring 2026, Su2026= Summer 2026).
    • Students must be as specific as the audit when listing coursework on their program plan. In instances where a variety of courses can fulfill a requirement, students do not need to choose a specific course. For example, a student needing a physical science general education course could indicate “GE-P” on their plan, or “3000-level major course” if you need a certain number of major courses at that level.
    • Your program plan is a contract. If you later need to make changes to your plan, please consult with an advisor.

    CLAS Triple Major/Degree Guidelines

Students who are interested in studying three disciplines may choose to pursue triple majors/degrees. The three disciplines may not extensively overlap. Each triple major/degree application will be reviewed to ensure that the student will complete a minimum of 15 credits of coursework exclusive to each major that will not count toward the other majors or any minors or certificates. Approval to pursue a triple major/degree does not guarantee the student will be granted all majors/degrees upon graduation.

CLAS students are limited to three majors/degrees.

Approval to pursue an academic goal such as a triple major/degree does not guarantee that the goal will be supported/funded by the student’s financial aid and/or scholarships or that the student will not incur an Excess Hours surcharge. Students should review all approved academic plans with the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships and consult their Excess Hours screen to ensure they know what, if anything, will be funded or incur a surcharge.

To earn triple majors/degrees, a student must be certified for and graduate from all undergraduate programs of study at the same time. Students do not need to take the final class(es) in each major/degree in their last semester, but students cannot graduate in one major before the others.

    Eligibility for Triple Majors/Degrees

All students seeking a triple major/degree in CLAS must:

    1. Have selected at least one CLAS major that is considered under-enrolled if all three majors are in CLAS. The following majors are considered under-enrolled:
      • African American Studies
      • Astronomy
      • Botany
      • Classical Studies
      • Foreign Languages and Literatures (all specializations)
      • Geography (including Environmental Geosciences)
      • Geology (including Environmental Geosciences)
      • Hispanic and Latin American Languages, Literatures and Linguistics
      • History
      • Jewish Studies
      • Philosophy
      • Physics
      • Religion
      • Sustainability Studies
      • Women’s Studies

While none of these are “underenrolled,” the Economics – Math – Statistics triple major, and the Economics – Math – Data Science triple major, are useful combinations for students who are looking at highly competitive graduate programs in Economics, and therefore may be considered.
    2. Have earned between 45 and 96 hours (not including AP, IB, dual enrollment, or overseas study credit).
    3. Meet the minimum UF GPA (specified below) required to pursue a CLAS triple major/degree:
      • 3.0 for students who want to complete three majors/degrees and, at most, one of those majors is overenrolled
      • 3.5 for students for whom two of the CLAS majors are overenrolled
        Overenrolled Majors in CLAS
        Biology (all tracks)
        Chemistry (all tracks)
        Computer Science
        Economics
        Psychology (all tracks)
    4. Meet all Universal Tracking term 5 requirements for all CLAS majors, before submitting their application. If any of the majors is outside CLAS, applicants must get approval from the appropriate college for that major.
    5. Meet all other CLAS progression standards for all three majors and demonstrate the potential for success in all three majors/degrees (successful completion of major and major-related courses without excessive W’s, grades less than C, or multiple repeats).
    6. Be able to complete the degree in a timely fashion (typically eight post-high school fall/spring semesters for students who entered UF as Summer B or Fall freshmen, eight post-high school spring/summer semesters for students who entered UF as Innovation Academy freshmen, and six fall/spring semesters for students who entered UF as transfer students after completing four or more post-high school fall/spring semesters elsewhere).
    7. Have clearly articulated and purposeful reasons for which the triple major/degree is appropriate.
    8. Not have been previously denied admission to that major as a transfer student.

    CLAS Triple Major/Degree Application Process

Choose either the Multiple Major or Dual Degree Form.

Multiple Majors (Within a College) ApplicationThree majors within CLAS that are all Bachelor of Arts degrees or all Bachelor of Science degrees. One diploma is awarded with both majors listed
Dual Degree ApplicationThree majors from two or more colleges OR a combination of both Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degrees within CLASMultiple diplomas are awarded

Although the forms have room for signatures from two departments (and two colleges if a dual degree), the student MUST include in the program plan the requirements for ALL THREE programs. In addition, students must include the same approvals for the third major by attaching an additional copy of the second sheet of the application with the third college/department’s approvals, including:

    • A notation that the application is approved or denied,
    • Comments or conditions if the application is approved,
    • Dated signature of third program’s authorized departmental representative, and
    • If the third program is NOT in CLAS, the signature of that program’s authorized college representative is also required.

Note that meeting the eligibility requirements above does not guarantee approval of multiple majors/degrees.

Canceling A Dual Degree or Double/Triple Major

To cancel a dual degree, double major, or triple major:

    • Complete the top portion of the relevant application form (leave the personal statement section and graduation plan blank).
    • Write “Cancel (Insert Major Name) Major” across the top of the form. Please be sure it is clear which major you would like to cancel.
    • Obtain all required signatures on the bottom of Page 2.
    • Assuming the application has the appropriate departmental/other college approvals, you may upload your form for review.
    • Your form will be returned to you via email with further instructions.
